Act Like a Lady Play Like a Beast

One-On-One with Rugby Players

The Johnson & Wales University Rugby Team began practice like every other day on September 7. Warm ups began with a run around the field, passing the ball in time with the captain’s call. You could hear the excitement in the air as coach Alex called out, “Call for the ball, and get loud.”

Nicole Alberta, captain, is a junior double majoring in Baking and Pastry, and Sports, Entertainment, and Event Management. Her position on the team is a scrum half which is a link between two positions who also removes the ball from the back of the scrum. Alberta described her favorite part of the game as, “Seeing the change of pace from practice to the game. Each girl gives 100% and you can see how great the team works together.”

Christina Martin, president, is a junior majoring in Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship. Her position is a fly-half, which is the player who orchestrates the attack and defense of the team. Martin was a founding member of the women’s rugby team and describes the reason why she wanted to begin a team by saying that, “The men’s rugby team was already established and there was a great opportunity to start a women’s team. The men’s team was very helpful and supportive while we began the formation of the team.”

Kaylee Cudjo, captain, is a sophomore majoring in Sports, Entertainment, and Event Management. Her position is the eight man who is a forward and is part of the pack in the back of a scrum. Alyssa Grecky, captain, is a junior double majoring in Business Administration and Baking and Pastry Arts. Her position on the team is a center who stands close to the fly-half or the first receiver on the other side of scrum.

On Saturday September 6 at 1 PM the JWU Rugby Team will play their home opener game against University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
