Why Studying Abroad is Critical to College Experience

College shouldn’t just be about going to class and receiving grades. There are so many ways to enrich your time here at JWU. Studying abroad can be part of your college experience and is something that is worth the time, money, and investment. Not only will you learn about yourself, but you will also delve deep into other fascinating cultures. JWU offers study abroad opportunities in countries across all continents and it is an experience that you wouldn’t be able to get in a classroom.

You will learn about money and how to budget properly. While dealing with different currencies it is inevitable that you will run into some mishaps. There are opportunities to work or intern while studying abroad, but if you are not working then you will have to stay on a strict budget. This will make you more appreciative of money in the long run.

After a while you will start to learn about yourself and who you want to become as a person. There are many different experiences and places that you will see abroad which will change your perspective. Not only will you learn about yourself, but you will also learn how to relate to others, especially those of different cultures and backgrounds. This is an important skill when going out into the workforce.

Even if you are only studying and not working or interning abroad, there is an opportunity to build connections with other students and professors. The students that you will be studying with are also likeminded and interested in the same subject material as you, therefore it would be a good idea to keep contact information for the future. You never know who might end up going down the same career path as you. It is also a perfect opportunity to get to know professors who have been in the industry for years. You never know who might be able to get you that job in the future across the world.

It is also important to experience a way of life that you are not familiar with. Whether it be learning a new system of transportation or adjusting to a different grading system, these are all changes that will make you more adaptable in the end which is a key skill that employers look for.

Taking a class in a different part of the world is also a valuable experience. If you are considering graduate school, then admissions will be able to see that you were able to handle how different the class while studying abroad was compared to taking a class at JWU.

Studying abroad during college enhances so many skills that employers look for, and leads to personal and professional growth. There are tons of scholarship opportunities under the study abroad section in the JWULink that can help to make the opportunity possible. It is highly suggested that you take part in studying abroad while here at Johnson & Wales University.
